Blogger vs WordPress: Daryl Lau Shares Insights

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Daryl Lau is the author of five blogs (!), and he says he has ideas for many more. Some of the topics he writes about include World of Warcraft, Malaysian Cusine, and template design for Google’s Blogspot service, which he’s been using for quite some time.

We were very flattered when Daryl chose HostNine to host his first WordPress blog. How to Earn Money Blogging was launched less than a month ago, but Daryl’s already reviewed almost 60 tools, resources and monetization opportunities – including HostNine’s affiliate program :)

What made Daryl decide to give WordPress a try? He says he was attracted to the wide range of useful plug-ins. His favorites are auto Adsense, related posts, smart archive and Google Sitemap creator. It took some work to customize his new blog with the right template and feature set, but as Daryl puts it, the resulting functionality is “totally amazing”. Also importantly, he’s found that blogs with independent domains have access to many more revenue generating opportunities.

Daryl’s now considering the possibility of moving some of his Blogspot blogs over to WordPress – or maybe he’ll start a few new ones. In either case, he won’t pay a cent more for hosting. That’s because most of our hosting packages support unlimited domains!

PS – Do you use WordPress too? We’d love to hear what your blog’s about. If you don’t have a blog but are thinking about setting one up, we’re here to help. Our support team will gladly help sort out any issues you come across, any time!

HostNine Welcomes Elite Kit!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Khalid Al-Khames, a serial entrepreneur, started a radio headsets store in 2006. Business kept expanding, as did his range of products. Soon his company became a one stop shop for the security and law enforcement industries: body armors, metal detectors, first ad kits… You name it, Earphones Direct had it.

Last month, Khalid decided to update his company’s brand name, and find a new hosting provider that can accommodate his growth. He spent hours and hours on his research, visiting many web hosting forums and review sites. The goal was to find a web host with “100% positive feedback” from its customers. As Khalid explains, security and law enforcement professionals are extra-selective about vendors they do business with. In order to build a solid reputation within his target market, he needs a super reliable website with maximum uptime.

Khalid’s new site, Elite Kit, was launched on March 25. Last week, he sent us a really nice email about HostNine’s excellent value, fantastic support, and our staff’s 24/7 availability. Thanks, Khalid; that’s what we’re here for! And congratulations on the new site!!

In the Spotlight: Liam Gardner, Web Hosting Express

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

2007 is Liam Gardner’s 5th year in the web design and web hosting business. He founded Casic Internet in 2002; the company was later rebranded as Web Hosting Express.

If you’re a HostNine customer, you may have met Liam through our forum (he is Express). But that’s not the only place where he’s a community leader. Web Hosting Express recently participated in a charity auction for the Great North Air Ambulance; the company donated a web design package that helped raise £1,591! The Great North Air Ambulance provides emergency response across a 5,500 square mile area in North England. On average, its airborne doctors and paramedics can reach a patient in just 8 minutes.

Web Hosting Express is a supporter of many other charities (Red Nose Day and Children in Need are two of Liam’s favorites), who automatically receive a 25% web hosting discount. The company also donates 10% of each week’s sales to non-profits within its customer base. Liam says that when you’re selling a “virtual product”, it’s extra important to build real world connections.

On the other hand, Liam’s also a fan of virtual collaboration. He helped BBC voiceover artist Lynsey Frost get her site up and running within 2 days. No meetings or phone calls were involved; everything was done via email.

Speaking of online communication, Web Hosting Express is looking out for the environment by shifting from paper to electronic invoicing and recycling 70% of the resources it uses. And speaking of invoicing (not to mention account setup and customer management), Web Hosting Express has just become a ModernBill-certified reseller! Be sure to say congrats the next time you see Liam in the forum :)
