I have just learned that a change has been made to H9's systems to "combat spam". This change effectively disables the Mailman mailing lists. Apparently, Mailman mailing lists will now no longer accept any emails from anyone who didn't use a H9 SMTP server to send the email - which is usually just about everyone that uses such lists. Mailman mailing lists are used to allow large groups of people to send emails to each other. If there are 100 people on the mailing list, then the list can be configured to allow all 100 members to send emails to listname@domain.com, and have their email distributed to everyone else on the list. If the system is changed to no longer accept emails from foreign SMTP servers, then the only people that can send to the mailing lists are the hosting account holders, and only if they're using H9 SMTP servers, which no-one wants to do anyway because they're so often blacklisted. This change was made without any warning to H9 customers. What's the point in having an "Announcements" forum if they don't post the changes they're making to the network there? The Mailman software already has its own built-in anti-spam solution. There doesn't appear to be any benefit in making this change. I'm hoping they'll realise the significance of this change and make some sort of compromise. Mark. |

You're mistaken - spam doesn't come from Mailman mailing lists. They have an excellent anti-spam system for filtering out junk mail. And spammers would never use such software for spamming. Too easy to trace. They'd simply use H9's SMTP server with their own spam-generating software. |

We have also run into enormous trouble with one of the client (they are sending opt-in press releases) as this change has happened without any prior notification. Also, I don't really see how this can benefit SPAM, at least in our client case. They are hosting mailing software (Oempro) on H9 server, but all the email is being sent via outside SMTP server dedicated to that service only. That way there is no option that H9 server could be blacklisted, as the e-mail originates from SMTP server. Currently, we were forced to change settings so that all the mailings are sent directly thru H9 server, which is not only causing additional load on the server, but greatly increases possibility for server being blacklisted (because of bounce, etc...). Please correct me if I'm wrong... Regards, Dejan. |
